Fundraisers planned to help family of Henderson girl who died of cancer | Events
A couple of weeks ago, I had the chance to tell the story of 14-year-old Kelsey Garrison - a Henderson girl who recently passed from cancer. In 2011, she was diagnosed with Ewing's Sarcoma, an extremely rare cancer.
While Kelsey was going through treatment, her family and friends created a Facebook page called "Hearts for Kelsey." They posted photographs of Kelsey and gave updates on her health. The page has grown over time and now has over 12,000 likes. Through this page, members of the community have been able to follow Kelsey's journey and in many ways, learn from a brave girl who didn't let a terminal illness change her attitude.
Kelsey's family now needs help paying for Kelsey's funeral services. Friends, family, and even people who didn't know her have searched for ways to help. There are quite a few fundraisers and events coming up to raise money for the family and to honor Kelsey. Tonight, Kelsey's family is having a balloon release at the Henderson riverfront at 7:30 p.m., followed by a candlelight vigil at 8 p.m. at Audubon Mill Park. They are asking everyone planning to attend to bring his or her own balloon and candle.
On Thursday, August 22, there will be a fundraiser at Rockhouse Pizza in Henderson. Rockhouse is giving 10 percent of their sales to Kelsey's family to cover funeral expenses .Thursday, September 12 at 9 pm, Double Dukes Saloon in Henderson is having a benefit in Kelsey's honor. There will be live music and a $5 cover charge. All proceeds are going to Kelsey's family.
There are also ZUMBA fitness classes going on at local churches this week. The classes are open to the public. There is one this Tuesday at 6:35 p.m. at Presbyterian Church, which is across from the library on Main Street. Another class will be Wednesday at 5:15 p.m. at Holy Name Church on 2nd Street. Saturday there will be a class at 9:30 a.m. also at Presbyterian Church.
