Subway pitchman Jared Fogle to speak at Chamber's Ellis Park meeting | Events
Jared Fogle, who gained international fame after losing over 245 pounds on a diet featuring Subway sandwiches and eventually becoming a spokesman for the restaurant chain, will be the featured speaker at the Henderson-Henderson County Chamber of Commerce's annual meeting, set for 5:30 p.m. May 9 at Ellis Park.
Fogle's presentation will include information about the Jared Foundation, which Fogle founded to help eliminate childhood obesity, as well as thoughts on wellness and the importance of an active lifestyle.
A native of Indiana, Fogle weighed more than 425 pounds in 1998, when he was 21, before embarking on a diet regimen that included low-calorie Subway sandwiches and lots of walking. A Chicago Subway franchise owner heard of Fogle's story and on Jan. 1, 2000, the Subway corporation ran its first television advertisement touting Fogle's dramatic weight loss. Fogle has gone on to star in dozens of subsequent Subway TV and print ad campaigns and made hundreds of personal appearances on behalf of the company, often using as a prop jeans with a 60-inch that he used to wear.
Fogle has become known as an enthusiastic leader in the movement for healthier lifestyles, especially for kids, and created his foundation in 2004 to help draw more attention to the national problem of adolescent obesity.
"The future of health care in the U.S. is certainly a hot topic for businesses of all sizes right now, and Jared Fogle has become a pied piper for one of the aspects of the national health care debate that will only increase in importance - wellness," Henderson Chamber President Brad Schneider said. "His presentation is a timely one, and we know his message will be well-received. Add to that the fact Jared simply has a lot of fans here who have enjoyed his Subway commercials over the years, and I think we're in for a really fun evening at our annual meeting."
Fogle's appearance is being underwritten by Tri-State Subway restaurant owners and will include visits to schools in Evansville and Henderson the morning and afternoon before the event at Ellis Park.
The 2013 Henderson-Henderson Chamber of Commerce Annual Meeting will follow a different format than in years past. Instead of a formal sit-down meal, the event, whose theme is "A Night in the Winner's Circle," will include select hors d'oeuvres and refreshments under a giant party tent near the paddock area at Ellis Park. The program will feature live music, special door prizes, the Love What's Local! Expo and the presentation of the chamber's Ambassador of the Year, Educator of the Year and Distinguished Citizen of the Year awards. Nominations for the latter two awards are being accepted until April 29. Nomination forms will be available beginning Thursday on the chamber's website, www.hendersonky.com.
Tickets for the chamber's annual meeting are $40 for members and $50 for non-members. Sponsorships are also available. For more information or to RSVP, contact the Chamber at (270) 826-9531 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
