EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE)- There was a blood drive at Cairo Elementary School Thursday afternoon.

Volunteers say they were busy collecting blood that will go to those in need, like Baby Archer, the grandson of the speech pathologist at the school.

Archer has a blood condition and has to get a transfusion every 4 to 5 weeks.

The American Red Cross has encouraged students at Cairo to be what they call 'Pint Sized Heroes' by asking their family members to donate at the drive.

"We have had an overwhelming response and we are delighted," says Deborah Harmon, the school's speech pathologist.

"I came in today and I saw the volunteers and it brought tears to my eyes. It made me want to cry."

If you didn't make it to Thursday night's drive, another one is in the works.

One pint of blood can save up to three lives.

Statistics show there's someone who needs blood every two seconds.
