Help plant flowers in downtown Henderson

 

The Downtown Henderson Partnership invites the community to come out and help with the flower beautification of downtown on Saturday, May 18.  The group will meet at The Depot parking lot located on Water Street across from the Post Office at 8:30 a.m.

Church youth groups, scout groups and families can join in a project to plant flowers. The flowers for downtown will be provided by Day's Garden Center and Benton's Garden Center.

Kentucky State Parks will be taking part in National Trails Day on June 1 with events across the state to recognize the excellent hiking opportunities at state parks including John James Audubon State Park in Henderson.

On June 1, you can venture out with the park’s interpretation staff on a hike by lantern light.  Some kid-friendly battery-lanterns will be provided. Feel free to bring your own; please no glass lanterns. Dress for the weather, bring a flashlight and meet at the Audubon Museum. Hike lasts 7-8:30 p.m. Free. Contact Julie McDonald at 270-826-2247 or juliea.mcdonald@ky.gov.

Nature program for toddlers this Friday in Henderson

 

Audubon State Park will host ‘Walk on the Wild Side’, a nature program for toddlers this Friday, April 26

Aimed at youngsters 3 to 5 years old, these 45 minute to one hour interactive programs will explore what nature has to offer. With each new topic toddlers will discover how wildlife and nature shapes the world we live in. Each program will involve one or more of the following activities: games, crafts, live animal visit, hike, or songs.

John James Audubon State Park hosts author April 21

 

 

John James Audubon State Park’s yearlong celebration of its 75th anniversary continues April 21 with the first of a series of talks on the Civilian Conservation Corp and the founding of the park during the dark days of the depression.

The free event will be held at the park’s museum.

The program speaker will be Annette Moore, who grew up in rural southern Indiana during Depression era. That experience serves as the backdrop for her book “Amazing Spirit: A Tribute to Dad.”

Middle school students get their hands dirty with gardening grant

 

South Middle School’s after school program, Bulldog Boulevard, recently received the Lowe’s Toolbox for Education grant in the amount of $2,345.00. The grant was received for a greenhouse/outdoor garden project.

The grant included materials to build a greenhouse, a concrete mixer to pour the foundation, and a tiller to break ground for a garden. Students will use the greenhouse to grow plants, make observations on plant growth, and experiment with different ratios of fertilizers to see which makes plants grow best.

The Henderson County Public Library has an exciting line-up of spring break activities.  All programs are free, and children in Preschool- through 5th grade are welcome to attend.  Space is limited, and registration is required. 

Registration will begin Monday, March 4 and run through Friday, March 29.

Scavenger hunt in downtown Henderson

Around 2001 the Downtown Henderson Project received a Renaissance grant for $95,000 to be used for unspecified projects in Kentucky downtowns. At the time, executive director Julie Turnipseed Martin had a vision of life-sized Audubon bird sculptures in downtown Henderson.  With the Renaissance grant money, this was the perfect time to pursue the vision.
