Home made boats take to YMCA pool

Seventh grade students from North Middle School used their engineering skills to create “boats” made of duct tape and cardboard in an attempt to make them seaworthy for a special event this week.

Once the boats were ready, they tried to row them across the pool at the Henderson YMCA.

A total of 15 boats were created. The grand winner from the 7th grade Navigators team was Ike Willoughby who made it across the pool in 30 seconds.

Henderson Community College, in partnership with Owensboro Community and Technical College, with funding provided by a grant from the National Science Foundation, will hold a Lego Summer Academy next month.

The academy will be held at Henderson Community College from Tuesday, June 18 to Thursday, June 20 from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM. The academy will focus on science and engineering activities, including:

HCHS seniors awarded Child Development Associate Credential

Henderson County High School Seniors Sara Mitchell and Jordan Ziegler have been awarded the Child Development Associate (CDA) credential in recognition of outstanding work with young children. The Council for Professional Recognition in Washington, D.C. awards credentials to early childhood educators who demonstrate the ability to constructively work with young children in group settings.

“It takes special knowledge, skills, and expertise to be an effective teacher of young children,” says Valora Washington, CEO of the Council. “It is a great honor to earn a CDA, and it shows a commitment to quality early childhood education.”

Bank On Henderson is partnering with Henderson County Schools and Old National Bank to teach financial literacy to more than 600 students at Henderson County High School on Friday, May 10.

Ben Joergens, Financial Empowerment Officer at Old National Bank, will be leading the financial literacy class throughout the day. Former Henderson County High School student, and current project manager for Bank on Henderson, Zach Chavira, will also be on hand to help lead the day’s activities. They will reach students at all high school grade levels, freshmen – seniors, and cover the following topics:

Henderson County High School’s Project Graduation is scheduled for May 24 from 11:00 p.m. – 4:00 a.m. at the high school. This is a community supported drug and alcohol free event for the current 2013 graduating class. Project Graduation coincides with the Henderson County High School graduation ceremony which will take place earlier in the evening. Nearly 325 students are expected to attend this year’s Project Graduation celebration.

Activities for the evening will include: karaoke, a D.J., bungee run, sumo wrestling, casino night, and, of course, plenty of food, soft drinks, and lemon shake ups. A multitude of prizes is given away at Project Graduation each year. Last year more than 85% of the graduating class attended. There were approximately 200 senior guests and 120 volunteers.

Paige O’Nan, principal at Niagara Elementary, has been accepted into the 2013-2014 Leadership Institute for School Principals class.

The Leadership Institute for School Principals offers public and private school principals in Kentucky an opportunity to receive powerful leadership training from the internationally acclaimed Center for Creative Leadership. The Institute is being provided by Kentucky’s business community through the Kentucky Chamber Foundation at no cost to participating principals. The Leadership Institute for School Principals will deliver cutting edge training to help principals:

Henderson Co. students chosen as Governor's Scholars

 

The Henderson County High School students chosen to participate in the 2013 Governor’s Scholar Program include juniors (upcoming senior class of 2014) Cain Cooper, Lindsey Critser, Emily Fulkerson, Ashley Marshall, Jessica Murch. Amy Jones was chosen as an alternate.

The Governor's Scholars Program is a summer residential program for outstanding high school students in Kentucky who are rising seniors. The Program’s mission is to enhance Kentucky's next generation of civic and economic leaders. The first class numbered 230 and was housed on one college campus. Since then, the program has enjoyed excellent support and grown to over 1,000 students on three campuses.
