Strange ending to Colonels' state baseball tourney win

Henderson County advanced to the semi-finals of the KHSAA Baseball Tournament Thursday night, with a crazy  1-0 win over Newport Catholic Central.  An extra-inning balk call resulted in the game’s only run.

In the bottom of the ninth, Kaleb Duckworth doubled to left center for the Colonels’ second hit.  Avery Pitt reached on an error and Duckworth went to third.

Pitt stole second but Catholic Central pitcher Josh Cain says he was so focused on the hitter that he didn’t know it.   On the next pitch, Cain threw to first but there was no one there to cover the bag.  The ball went into the stands and it was ruled a balk since a pitcher can’t throw to an unoccupied base.

Duckworth trotted home from third and the Colonels had a date with Meade County in the semi-finals after a 1-0 win.

They'll face Meade County at 7:30 Central time tonight.
